History of Nabeshima Shoto Park

The site of Nabeshima Shoto Park was used during the Edo period (1603-1867) as a subordinate mansion of the Kishu Tokugawa family. This sub-yashiki was a short distance from Edo Castle and a refuge for the clan's samurai and their retainers. After the Meiji Restoration, the Tokugawa family downsized, and this land was sold to the Nabeshima family.

In 1876, the Nabeshima family established a tea garden, Shotoen, on this land. Here, Sayama tea was transplanted and sold under the name Shoto. This tea garden, which utilized spring water, was known to provide high-quality tea in Tokyo.

In 1932, Shotoen ceased to be a tea garden and was transformed into a children's playground centered around a spring-fed pond. This change brought new value to the local community by providing a place for local children to interact with nature.

In 1950, Nabeshima Shoto Park was donated to Shibuya Ward, where it was developed into its current form. As a result of this donation, the park has become famous for residents' relaxing and enjoying nature in all four seasons. Many people also use it.

Highlights of Nabeshima Shoto Park

At the center of Nabeshima Shoto Park is a rich spring-fed pond with a tasteful water wheel spinning on its surface. The waterwheel is fed by a spring that dates back to the days of the tea plantation, and it provides visitors with a tranquil and healing experience. Paths have been built around the pond, allowing visitors to enjoy the waterwheel from various angles as they stroll around.

Nabeshima Shoto Park is where visitors can enjoy nature in all four seasons. In spring, someiyoshino cherry trees and weeping cherry trees are in full bloom, attracting visitors. In autumn, the beautiful foliage of the Iroha maple trees, sasanqua, and mountain camellias highlights the park. These natural features remind visitors of the remnants of the former tea plantation and tell them of the changing seasons.

In the park, benches are arranged around a spring-fed pond, allowing visitors to relax and enjoy themselves. There is also playground equipment for children to enjoy, making it a popular spot for families. These facilities provide a tranquil respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.
